焼尻島は、夏真っ盛り。
でも、今年の夏は少し涼しく、過ごしやすい日が続いています。

島をぶらぶら歩いていると、あちらこちらで**オニユリ（鬼百合）**が風に吹かれて、ゆらゆらと揺れています。

「ユリ」という名前の由来には、いくつかの説があります。

地中にある球根の鱗片が重なり合っている姿から、昔は「百合（ひゃくごう）」と呼ばれていたともいわれています。

また、大きな花が風もないのに揺れることから、「揺れ」が転じて「ゆり」と呼ばれるようになったという説もあります。

では、なぜ「鬼」なのでしょう。

それは、この花がほかのユリよりも大きく、鮮やかな色と存在感を持っていることから、「鬼」の名がついたともいわれています。

夏の焼尻島では、そんなオニユリがあちらこちらで風に揺れています。

暑すぎない今年の夏。

Summer in Full Bloom – Yagishiri Island

Summer is in full swing on Yagishiri Island.
But this year, we are enjoying a pleasantly cool summer.

As I wander around the island, I see Tiger Lilies swaying gently in the breeze everywhere I go.

There are several stories about the origin of the Japanese name yuri (“lily”).

One theory says that the overlapping scales of the bulbs underground reminded people of many layers piled together, and the flower was once called hyakugō, meaning “a hundred layers.”

Another theory is that the large flowers tend to sway even when there is hardly any wind. The word for “sway” (yureru) may have eventually become yuri.

But why is it called Oni-yuri, or “Demon Lily”?

One explanation is simply its impressive size and striking appearance. Compared with other lilies, its large, vivid flowers have a powerful presence—almost as if they belonged to an “oni,” a legendary Japanese demon.

In summer, Tiger Lilies can be seen swaying here and there across Yagishiri Island.

This year’s cooler summer is perfect for taking a leisurely walk and enjoying the flowers along the way.
