ウメガサソウ

やっと見つけました

しばらく行方がわからなくなっていたオトギリソウとウメガサソウが、林の中でひっそりと咲き始めました。

どちらも小指の爪ほどしかない小さな花です。
とくにウメガサソウは草丈がわずか4センチほど。注意深く探さなければ、すぐそばにあっても気づきません。

オトギリソウも小さな花をほかの草花に紛れるように咲かせるので、見つけるのはひと苦労です。

「ひょっとしたら今年も咲いているかもしれない。」

そう思って毎日のように森へ通い、ようやくその姿を見つけたときには、思わず声が出ました。

「おー、生きていたか！ 探したぞ！」

島を歩いていると、こんな小さな再会が待っています。

それが、焼尻島の森を歩く楽しみの一つです。

At Last, I Found Them

At last, I found them.

After disappearing for a while, the St. John’s Wort and the tiny Pipsissewa have quietly begun to bloom once again in the forest.

Both flowers are no bigger than the tip of a little finger.
The pipsissewa grows to only about four centimeters tall, so unless you look very carefully, you will simply walk past it.

The flowers of St. John’s Wort are just as small, hidden among the surrounding plants, making them easy to miss.

Thinking, “Perhaps they’re here somewhere,” I wandered through the forest day after day.

Then, at last, I found them.

Without thinking, I smiled and exclaimed,

“Ah, there you are! I was looking for you!”

Moments like these are among the quiet joys of walking through the forests of Yagishiri Island.
