焼尻島の夏　蝉の声

森に入ると、まるで蝉の声が空から降ってくるように聞こえます。

蝉は、3年から5年もの間を土の中で過ごし、ようやく地上へ姿を現します。
そして、わずか一、二週間の間に伴侶を見つけ、子孫を残して、その短い命を終えます。

なんとはかなく、それでいて力強い命なのでしょう。

昔、こんな都々逸がありました。

「恋に焦がれて鳴く蝉よりも
鳴かぬ蛍が身を焦がす」

声高に想いを伝える蝉よりも、黙って胸に秘める蛍のほうが、恋心は深い――。

昔の人は、本当にうまいことを言ったものです。

森いっぱいに響く蝉の声を聞いていると、そんな言葉がふと頭に浮かび、夏のひとときが少しだけ味わい深く感じられます。

Summer on Yagishiri Island – The Song of the Cicadas

Step into the forest, and it feels as though the songs of the cicadas are falling from the sky.

A cicada spends three to five years underground before emerging into the summer light.
Then, in just a week or two, it must find a mate, leave behind the next generation, and complete its brief life.

How short—and yet how remarkable—that life is.

There is an old Japanese verse that says:

“More passionate than the cicada crying for love
is the silent firefly, burning with love in its heart.”

The verse reminds us that the deepest feelings are not always the ones spoken aloud.

The people of old had a wonderful way of expressing life’s truths.

As the chorus of cicadas fills the forest, it is hard not to pause and reflect on the beauty and fragility of life.
