ツリガネニンジン

野鳥たちの渡りがひと段落すると、いよいよ焼尻島は花の季節を迎えます。

まさに、焼尻島の真価が最も輝く季節です。

島を歩けば、あちらこちらでツリガネニンジンの花が風に揺れています。
緑の中に咲く淡い青紫色の花は、眺めているだけで心を穏やかにしてくれます。

ツリガネニンジンは、若芽や根が食用になることでも知られ、別名「トトキ」と呼ばれています。

昔からこんな言葉が伝えられています。

「山でうまいはオケラにトトキ、嫁に食わすは惜しゅうござる。」

本当にそう言ったのかどうかはともかく、それほど美味しい山菜として親しまれてきたのでしょう。

花を楽しみ、味も楽しめる――。

そんなところも、ツリガネニンジンの魅力です。

Yagishiri in Full Bloom

As the season of migrating birds comes to an end,
Yagishiri Island begins its next celebration—the season of wildflowers.

This is when the island truly comes into its own.

All around the island, the delicate Bellflower (Adenophora triphylla) begins to bloom.
Its soft blue blossoms, swaying gently among the green fields, have a quiet beauty that soothes the heart.

This plant is also edible and is traditionally known by the name Totoki.

An old Japanese saying goes:

“Among the delicacies of the mountains, nothing surpasses okera and totoki—
they’re too delicious to waste on a bride!”

Whether anyone ever really said it or not, the saying tells us just how highly this wild plant was once valued.

The Bellflower is a flower to admire, and a mountain vegetable to enjoy.

That, too, is part of the simple charm of Yagishiri Island.
