エゾエンゴサク（蝦夷延胡索）が、焼尻自然公園に咲きはじめました。
この花が顔を出すと、いよいよ春本番です。

野鳥も草花も、そして島の人たちや野良猫までもが、
どこか生き生きと動き出します。

「延胡索」という名は、もともと漢方薬（生薬）の名前に由来します。
この仲間の球根を乾燥させたものが「延胡索」と呼ばれ、
浄血や鎮痛などの効能があるとされてきました。
江戸時代中期には、小石川御薬園で栽培されていたという記録も残っています。北海道に自生することから、「エゾ」の名が添えられました。

When the Ezo-engosaku (Corydalis ambigua) begins to bloom in Yakishiri Nature Park,
it is a sure sign that spring has truly arrived.

As these flowers open,
wild birds, plants, the island’s people—and even the stray cats—
all seem to come alive again.

The name engosaku originally refers to a traditional herbal medicine.
It is made from the dried bulbs of plants in this family
and has long been valued for its medicinal properties,
such as improving blood circulation and relieving pain.
Records show that it was cultivated at the Koishikawa Medicinal Herb Garden
in the mid-Edo period.

Because it grows naturally in Hokkaido,
the name is prefixed with “Ezo.”
