The History of Yagishiri Island: Nenbutsu-zaka Slope

The road running from in front of the shrine to Shinkaibashi Bridge in the Toyosaki area of Nishiura was once used by children on their way to school.

Children living in the Higashihama area had to follow this road and cross a hill to reach their school. However, Yagishiri Island is often exposed to strong northwesterly winds, and in winter, blizzards were a frequent occurrence.

Despite these harsh conditions, the children made their way to school on foot, struggling against the wind and snow.

The islanders felt that walking up this slope was so difficult that one almost had to recite Buddhist prayers as they went. That is how the slope came to be known as Nenbutsu-zaka, which can be loosely translated as “the Buddhist Prayer Slope.”

Later, as Japan entered the Second World War, an army engineering unit was stationed on Yagishiri Island.

The soldiers cut into the cliff below Nenbutsu-zaka and carved out a narrow road. It became known as the Shin Dōro, or “New Road.” However, the road was considered dangerous, so children did not use it to get to school.

After the war ended, more of the cliff was cut away to widen the road. The crushed stone produced during the work was put to use in harbor construction and other projects.

This road eventually developed into what is now known as Kōhei Kaidō, or “Engineers’ Road.”

Today, people may pass along these roads without giving them much thought. Yet they hold memories of the hardships endured by schoolchildren in the past, the work carried out by soldiers during wartime, and the efforts of islanders who sought to make everyday life a little easier.

Nenbutsu-zaka—the slope where people felt they had to recite Buddhist prayers as they walked.

Its name carries the memory of Yagishiri’s people, who faced the island’s harsh natural conditions and persevered through difficult times.
