天狗の伝説　其の二

昔、島の漁師が沖へ漁に出たところ、突然、船がまったく動かなくなり、漁ができなくなってしまいました。

また、山へ木を伐りに行った人も、急に力が抜けて立っていられなくなり、とうとうあきらめて家へ戻りました。

困った村人たちは巫女に相談しました。

すると巫女は、

「それは島に住む天狗が意地悪をしているのです。近いうちに助太刀をしてくれる者が現れるでしょう。その者に頼みなさい」

と告げました。

数日後、島に大きな亀が現れました。

村人たちは、「この亀こそ神様の使いに違いない」と考え、天狗のもとへ案内しました。

それを見た天狗は怒り、三日三晩、島を大嵐にしました。

それでも大亀は少しもひるみません。

そしてとうとう、天狗が住んでいたオンコ（イチイ）の大木を押し倒してしまいました。

天狗は悲鳴を上げながら木から転げ落ち、

「もう意地悪はしないよ！」

と言い残して、森の奥へ逃げていきました。

それからというもの、天狗は島民を苦しめるのではなく、島の人々のために尽くすようになったといいます。

そのとき天狗が落ちて折れたオンコの木は、今も島に残っていると伝えられています。

それ以来、島の人々は天狗を怒らせないように、そして森を大切にするため、むやみに木を伐りすぎないようにしてきたのだそうです。

昔から伝わるこの物語は、焼尻島の森と人との関わりを伝える、島ならではの民話なのかもしれません。

The Legend of the Tengu – Part Two

Long ago, a fisherman from Yagishiri Island went out to sea, but suddenly his boat stopped moving. No matter what he did, he could not fish and eventually had to return home.

Another villager went into the forest to cut firewood, but suddenly all his strength disappeared. Unable to even stand, he finally gave up and returned home.

The villagers, troubled by these strange events, went to a local miko, a shrine maiden, for advice.

She told them,
“The Tengu who lives on the island is playing tricks on you. But soon, someone will come to help. Ask that one for help.”

A few days later, a huge sea turtle appeared near the island.

The villagers thought, “Surely this must be a messenger of the gods.” They led the turtle to the place where the Tengu was believed to live.

Furious, the Tengu unleashed a terrible storm upon the island that lasted for three days and three nights.

But the great turtle did not give up.

At last, it pushed over the Japanese yew tree (Onko) where the Tengu lived.

The Tengu came tumbling down from the tree, crying out in defeat.

“All right! I won’t cause trouble anymore!”

With that, the Tengu fled deep into the forest.

From then on, the Tengu was said to protect the islanders and help them rather than torment them.

It is said that the broken Onko tree, where the Tengu fell, still remains on the island today.

And ever since, the people of Yagishiri have been careful not to anger the Tengu—and have avoided cutting down too many trees.

Perhaps this old legend is also a reminder from the island itself:

Respect the forest, and the forest will protect you.
