ヒトリシズカ（一人静）
(Chloranthus japonicus)

自然観察で島を訪れた人たちを案内し、今年もヒトリシズカを探しに行きました。ところが、いつもの場所には姿が見当たりません。

みんなで周囲をくまなく探しましたが見つからず、
今年はお休みなのかもしれないと、半ばあきらめて来年に期待することにしました。

ところが後日、別の場所を歩いていると、
木陰でひっそり咲いている姿を見つけ、ほっと胸をなで下ろしました。

「ヒトリシズカ」という名前のとおり、毎年たくさんの人に見られるのが少し恥ずかしくて、今年は静かに場所を変えていたのかもしれません。

その名は、源義経の愛妾として知られる静御前の伝説に由来するといわれています。
花言葉は「隠された愛」。

贈り物にするときは、少し気をつけたほうがいいかもしれません。

**Flowers of Yagishiri Island

Hitorishizuka**
(Chloranthus japonicus)

While guiding visitors around the island for a nature walk,
we went searching for Hitorishizuka once again this year.
But in its usual spot, the flower was nowhere to be found.

We searched carefully through the surrounding woods,
yet could not find a single one.
At last, we gave up and decided to hope for better luck next year.

Then, some days later, while exploring another area,
we discovered it blooming quietly in the shade.
Seeing it there brought a sense of relief.

Perhaps, true to its name Hitorishizuka—“quietly alone”—
it simply wished to rest this year away from too many visitors.

The flower’s name is said to come from the legend of Shizuka Gozen,
the beloved companion of Minamoto no Yoshitsune.

Its language of flowers is “hidden love,”
so one might want to be a little careful when giving it as a gift.
