羽幌の沖合、およそ二十三キロの日本海に、焼尻島は静かに浮かんでいる。
周囲十二キロほどの小さな島だが、長い歴史を持っている。

その名はアイヌ語の「ヤンゲシリ（陸地から見て近い島）」に由来する。
対して、もっと北にある島は「レブンシリ（遠い島）」、隣の天売島は「チウレ（足の形の島）」と呼ばれていた。

北海道の地名の多くは、こうしたアイヌ語に漢字を当てたものだ。
ただ、「尻を焼く」「天を売る」など、当て字の響きだけを聞くと少しユーモラスで、
当時の開拓官たちの遊び心が感じられる。

ちなみに、日本海に浮かぶ五つの島のうち、利尻・天売・焼尻・奥尻の四つは火山活動によって生まれた島。一方、礼文島だけは、日本海が形成されたときに取り残された大陸の一部だという。

海と風と火の力がつくった島々。
その中で焼尻島は、静かに、けれど確かに、北の海の物語を語り続けている。

The Story of Yagishiri Island

About 23 kilometers off the coast of Haboro,
Yagishiri Island rests quietly in the Sea of Japan —
a small island of only twelve kilometers around, yet rich with history.

Its name comes from the Ainu word Yangeshiri, meaning “the island close to the mainland.”
Farther north lies Rebunshiri—“the distant island”—and nearby Chiure, now called Teuri, meaning “foot-shaped island.”

Many place names in Hokkaido are Japanese interpretations of Ainu words.
But when written in kanji, they sometimes take on humorous meanings—like “burning a rear” or “selling the sky.”
Perhaps the Meiji officials who chose them had a quiet sense of humor.

Among the five islands in the Sea of Japan—Rishiri, Teuri, Yagishiri, Okushiri, and Rebun—
four were born of volcanic uplift,
while Rebun alone remains a fragment of the ancient continent left behind when the Sea of Japan first opened.
