おんこの話（２）**

おんこの和名は「イチイ」。
学名は Taxus cuspidata で、これはシーボルトが名づけたといわれています。

属名の Taxus は「弓」、種小名 cuspidata は「先が鋭い」という意味をもちます。
実際、アイヌの人々もこの木を「クネニ（＝弓になる木）」と呼び、
北海道には竹がなかったことから、この木で弓を作っていたと考えられています。

また、ヨーロッパでも同じ木で作られた弓が「ロングボウ（Longbow）」として知られ、戦いの歴史の中で重要な役割を果たしてきました。

おんこの木は、静かに見えて、じつは世界のあちこちで人の営みに深く関わってきた木なのです。

The Onko Tree (2)**

The Japanese name for the onko tree is ichii,
and its scientific name, Taxus cuspidata, is said to have been given by Siebold.

The name Taxus means “bow,” and cuspidata carries the meaning “sharp-pointed.”
The Ainu people also called this tree kuneni, meaning “a wood for making bows.”
Since bamboo does not grow in Hokkaido, it is believed that the Ainu made their bows from this very tree.

In Europe as well, bows crafted from the same kind of yew were known as the longbow,
a weapon that played an important role throughout centuries of warfare.

Quiet as it may appear, the onko is a tree that has been deeply connected to human life and history across the world.
