おんこの話（４）**

おんこの木は、学名を Taxus cuspidata といいます。
Taxus という言葉には「弓」という意味がありますが、同時に「毒」と結びつく言葉でもあり、この木が秘めた危険性を表しています。

赤い実は甘く、島の人々にとって長いあいだ素朴なおやつでした。
しかし、葉や種には非常に強い毒があり、ほんの数粒でも命に関わるとされています。

この毒は物語の中にも登場します。
シェイクスピアの『ハムレット』では、デンマーク王が眠っているあいだに、耳に毒を注がれて殺されます。その毒は、イチイから取られたものだと言われています。。

それでも秋になると、ヒレンジャクやキレンジャクの群れが焼尻島に集まり、
赤い実を食べ、種を運び去っていきます。
毒と命は隣り合わせに存在しながら、島の秋を静かに彩っているのです。

The Onko Tree (4)**

The onko tree is known scientifically as Taxus cuspidata.
The word Taxus means “bow,” but it is also linked to “poison,” reflecting the tree’s hidden danger.

The red berries are sweet and have long been a simple treat for islanders.
Yet the leaves and seeds are highly toxic—just a few can be fatal.

This poison appears in stories as well.
In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the King of Denmark is killed by poison poured into his ear,
often said to have come from the yew.

And still, each autumn, flocks of waxwings gather on Yakishiri Island,
feeding on the berries and carrying the seeds away unharmed.
Poison and life exist side by side, quietly coloring the island’s autumn.
