七庚申（しちこうしん）

七庚申は、昭和6年ごろ、水野長左衛門によって秋田から焼尻島にもたらされたといわれています。当初は島内三か所に分けて建てられ、その一つは白浜にありましたが、参拝に不便なため、現在は厳島神社付近へ移されています。

庚申信仰は道教の思想に由来し、十干と十二支を組み合わせた暦の「庚申」にちなむものです。江戸時代には農村を中心に広まり、五穀豊穣を願う神として人々に親しまれてきました。

Shichi-Kōshin (Seven Kōshin Stones)

The Shichi-Kōshin monuments were brought to Yagishiri Island around 1931
by Mizuno Chōzaemon from Akita.

They were originally erected at three locations across the island.
One stood at Shirahama, but due to the difficulty of visiting the site,
it was later relocated near the present-day Itsukushima Shrine.

Kōshin belief originates from Taoist traditions,
based on the combination of the ten celestial stems and the twelve zodiac signs.
During the Edo period, it spread widely in rural areas,
where it was revered as a deity for abundant harvests.
