おんこの話（３）**

おんこの学名は Taxus cuspidata。
その Taxus という言葉には、「弓」という意味があるといいます。
ヨーロッパではこの木で作られた弓が「ロングボウ（長弓）」として知られ、
長いあいだ戦いの歴史の中で重要な役割を果たしてきました。

今からおよそ六百年前、ヨーロッパ百年戦争のさなか、
イングランド王ヘンリー五世は、ロングボウを手にした弓兵隊を率いてフランスへと進軍します。
1415年、アジンコートの戦いと呼ばれるこの戦で、
七千ほどのイングランド軍は、二万にも及ぶフランスの騎馬軍を打ち破りました。この勝利によってヘンリー五世はフランスを制圧し、
次のフランス王と目されるまでになります。
しかし、その後フランスには、ジャンヌ・ダルクという救世主が現れることになります。

アジンコートの戦いをきっかけに、ロングボウの名は広く知られるようになりました。
森の中で静かに育つおんこの木が、
遠いヨーロッパの歴史の転換点に深く関わっていた――
そう思うと、この木の姿が少し違って見えてくる気がします。

The Onko Tree (3)**

The scientific name of the onko tree is Taxus cuspidata.
The word Taxus means “bow,” and in Europe this wood became famous as the material for the longbow, a weapon that played a crucial role in the history of warfare.

Around the year 1415, during the Hundred Years’ War,
King Henry V of England led his army—supported by skilled longbowmen—into France.
This conflict came to be known as the Battle of Agincourt.

At Agincourt, about 7,000 English soldiers, many of them archers armed with longbows,
defeated a vastly superior French force of some 20,000 mounted knights.
The power of the longbow changed the course of the battle.

Victorious, Henry V went on to dominate much of France and was named heir to the French throne.
Yet history would later see the rise of a savior for France—Joan of Arc.

It was through this battle that the name longbow became widely known,
and the yew—quietly growing in forests far from the battlefield—
secured its place in the story of human history.
