「海鳥の島」として知られる天売島は、「天売島海鳥繁殖地」として国の天然記念物にも指定されている特別な場所です。オロロン三兄弟の愛称で知られるウミガラス（オロロン鳥）、ケイマフリ、ウトウの3種が有名ですが、この島にはもう一種とても重要な海鳥がいます。それがウミスズメです。

ウミスズメは、かつては天売島のほか、根室のハボマイモシリ島、岩手の三貫島でも繁殖が確認されていました。しかし、近年、国内で安定的な繁殖が確認され、報告されている繁殖地は天売島だけとなっており、その希少性が際立っているのです。

Teuri Island, known as the “Island of Seabirds,” is a special place designated as a National Natural Monument for its “Teuri Island Seabird Breeding Grounds.”

The three famous species, affectionately called the “Ororon Three Brothers,” are the Common Murre (known locally as the Ororon bird), the Spectacled Guillemot, and the Rhinoceros Auklet. However, there is one more highly important seabird on the island: the Ancient Murrelet.

The Ancient Murrelet was once confirmed to breed in other locations in Japan, including Habomai Mosiri Island in Nemuro and Sangan Island in Iwate, in addition to Teuri Island. However, in recent years, Teuri Island is the only breeding ground in Japan where stable breeding has been confirmed and reported, highlighting the species’ extreme rarity and the island’s critical importance.
