秋の焼尻島の番人

秋の焼尻島。
空気が澄み、海の青がひときわ深く見える。
夏の賑わいが過ぎ、フェリーも静かに港を出ていく。
今日は空が高く晴れたので、一人で島を歩いてみることにした。

島の南側へ回ると、人の気配がすっかり消えている。
聞こえるのは波の音と、草を揺らす風のささやきだけ。
夏には笑い声であふれていたキャンプ場も、今は静まり返り、
風にゆれるススキだけが季節の移ろいを語っている。

そんな中、ふと何かが動いた。
目を凝らして近づいてみると、一段高いサイトの上でじっとこちらを見つめる影がある。
ノスリだ。鋭いまなざしで、この場所を見張るように止まっている。

人のいなくなったキャンプ場を見守るその姿は、まるで島の番人のようだ。
誰もいないように見えても、島の時間は静かに、確かに流れ続けている。
夏が終わっても、焼尻島は生きている――穏やかな呼吸のように。

The Guardian of Autumn Yagishiri

Autumn has arrived on Yagishiri Island, bringing a calm clarity to the air and a deeper hue to the sea.
The crowds of summer are gone, and with them the noise and bustle that once filled the ferry and the beaches.
Today, under a clear blue sky, I set out alone for a walk.

When I reach the southern side of the island, there’s no one around—just the quiet rhythm of waves and the whisper of wind in the grass.
The campsite that was once filled with laughter now lies still, the only movement coming from the silver reeds swaying gently in the breeze.

Then, something stirs.
I stop, narrowing my eyes. A shadow moves on the upper tier of the campsite.
As I step closer, I realize I’m being watched. A buzzard sits there, sharp-eyed and perfectly still, like a sentinel guarding its territory.

Perhaps it’s the true caretaker of this place, keeping watch now that the visitors have gone.
On Yagishiri, even after the season ends and human voices fade away, the island continues to breathe quietly—alive in its own unhurried way.
